Emily Bates is Back from Boston
Congratulations to Emily Bates, our Bridges Program Coordinator, who completed the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 19, 2010 in excellent form. This was Emily’s third consecutive year in Boston, and eighth marathon overall. Out of over 23,000 skilled runners, she placed in the top 35% overall, the top 17% of all women, and the top 26% of runners in her age group. In addition, she beat her previous time in Boston by about 12 minutes, with the superb (and lucky?) time of 3:33:33.
It is an honor to let you know that in addition to this great feat, Emily’s marathon effort raised almost $1,800.00 on behalf of Turning Point.
Upon reflecting on her run, Emily stated that remembering the struggles that Turning Point clients face every day, “helped me up the hills and allowed me to take in the crowds in a way I feel like I have never done before.”
Emily’s job at Turning Point requires daily support and treatment for children and families who are dealing with the challenge of mental illness. She supervises a team of expert staff who work together to find solutions for very complicated problems, and she ensures that these services are offered in a spirit of respect and compassion.
The day-in, day-out, training required for a marathoner is much like our Turning Point mission to provide solid support. Emily’s training results in resilience and strength but it’s difficult, particularly on those chilly days, to dig deep and put in the miles. Emily commitment was evident when she was back in the office the morning after the race, ready to continue to provide care to the same clients that inspired her throughout her training and as she completed her race.
Challenges for nonprofits like Turning Point abound, as they have for many months, but we are undaunted in our enthusiasm and willingness to see creative responses to the circumstances we and our clients face. People like Emily and supporters like you encourage us to put in the days of “training” and to persevere throughout the long run. It’s a privilege to work with our clients and community. Sincere thanks for all of the ways you support us.
