In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Turning Point Behavioral Health Care Center has creatively adapted its extensive services for individuals experiencing psychiatric crisis. With no out of pocket cost to the individuals who utilize them, the crisis services at Turning Point are staffed by an experienced crisis support team and provide life-saving support and a valuable resource, particularly for low-income and underserved residents.
In addition to its crisis line, Turning Point maintains The Living Room & Resource Center at Turning Point, the agency’s award-winning program for adults in need of immediate crisis support. Now in its ninth year, The Living Room is ordinarily accessible on a walk-in basis for adults experiencing psychiatric crisis. Responding to the new circumstances of COVID-19, Turning Point has undertaken the challenge of transforming The Living Room to a virtual format. The Living Room team is now accessible by phone or via telehealth format to support callers in crisis.
An innovative program that has garnered national attention, The Living Room & Resource Center at Turning Point offers a safe and calm environment in which guests can resolve crises with trained therapists and Recovery Support Specialists. Turning Point’s talented Recovery Support Specialists bring to their work personal lived experience with mental illness and provide uniquely skilled support for guests in crisis. The Living Room provides a comfortable alternative to hospital emergency rooms and last year achieved a 100% success rate in deflecting guests away from visits to emergency rooms.
Chief Clinical Officer, Noy Frial-Lopez, Psy.D, CADC said, “In its nine years, The Living Room has provided exceptional care at no cost to guests, making it an invaluable resource for underserved and vulnerable community members. Faced with the COVID-19 crisis, we were determined to continue making this important program available and are very gratified to have found a way to do so.”
