  • Therapy Services

    Finding the help you need

Turning Point’s outpatient therapy program is a foundational bedrock program at Turning Point. For over 50 years, this essential program has remained at the very core of our organization. For adults, families, and children beginning at age 6, our therapy services are designed to meet the needs and preferences of our diverse community of clients.

Whatever the situation or diagnosis, the goals of our therapy program remain true to our mission. They include providing compassionate and trauma-informed care that supports recovery, achieves each client’s personal treatment goals, enhances quality of life, ameliorates or eliminates symptoms, and increases functioning and integration into the community and family.

At Turning Point, we follow the recovery model of treatment: setting personalized treatment goals with each client, working to control or eliminate symptoms, increasing functioning and integration into the community, and empowering each individual to reach their goals with therapeutic support.

At Turning Point, we consider respect to be a basic human right, we treat clients with the same dignity we would want for ourselves, and we are committed to providing personalized treatment in a context of understanding, compassion, and hope.

  • Group Therapy

An open door to recovery support

Turning Point’s therapeutic groups program opens multiple pathways for learning, personal growth, and supportive fellowship within a vibrant and welcoming community.

Unusually expansive and diverse, our groups provide vital support and structure to clients and qualified others,* but are not meant to serve as freestanding treatment plans. Rather, they augment therapy and provide a valuable daily structure and critical community support for group members.

Operating throughout the day, five days a week, groups at Turning Point are available for many levels of ability.  They meet weekly, providing help with socialization, skill building, self-care, peer support, coping skills, and symptom management. The following are just some of our many popular group focus areas:

    • Art and music therapy
    • Gardening, nutrition, and healthy cooking
    • Mindfulness, exercise, and yoga
    • Building self-esteem
    • Anger management
    • Anxiety management
    • Conflict resolution
    • Addressing addiction
    • Symptom management
    • Budgeting and grocery shopping
    • Confidence-building in navigating the city
    • Socialization through activities in the community
    • Self-expression through the production of a quarterly client newsletter
    • And many more

With the robust support that groups provide, many participants come to see Turning Point as a second home where they will be welcomed, heard, supported, and respected.* Our groups program encourages clients to engage in peer support, to learn new skills, to structure their days productively, and to develop insight, self-awareness, and an increased understanding of themselves and others—all within the safe and compassionate confines of a community dedicated to solid support.

For more information about current group offerings, please feel free to contact our Groups Coordinator.

*Most group members are Turning Point clients, but this is not a requirement. Individuals regularly seeing therapists outside of Turning Point may qualify to participate.

  • Case Management

Meeting the challenges of daily living

The mission of the Turning Point adult case management program is to provide problem-solving services and community connections for adults in Niles Township who experience challenges in daily living. Case managers and participants customize comprehensive service plans and work in tandem to empower clients to live and grow with lasting positive change.

Some of the areas that a case manager can help with include connecting clients with resources like food pantries and shelters and applying for entitlements like food stamps, cash assistance, and health insurance. Case managers can also help clients with the Social Security Disability application process and can accompany clients to some related appointments. A case manager may accompany a client to the local office of the Illinois Department of Human Services to work out issues with Medicaid coverage and related spend-down issues.

We believe that our clients are best served when a compassionate professional works with them to comprehensively assess their short-term and long-term needs. We believe that one of the greatest signs of respect is to underscore a client’s strengths and potential, even in a time of crisis, by seeking an appropriate balance for the case manager and client to share the action taken on the client’s behalf.

  • Residential

    Independent living support

Turning Point’s Transitional Living Program (TLP) is a scattered-site supported living apartment program serving adults with chronic mental illness. TLP is time limited and designed for individuals who want to live independently in their own apartments but need to learn or improve their independent living skills before being able to do so.

The program’s two-bedroom apartments are located in the surrounding area. Program participants share an apartment with another TLP client (of the same gender) and work with a case manager on learning independent living skills. Clients in TLP are required to be involved in 15 to 20 hours of structured activities each week, such as school, work, or volunteering.Participants may remain in the program for up to three years or until they find affordable housing.

All residents receive ongoing case management services to assist in improving skills associated with independent living. This is in addition to any individual or group therapy, medication management, or other services provided by Turning Point.

The program is not intended as a resource only to provide housing. It is designed for individuals with a chronic mental illness who need and want assistance with their independent living skills and to learn how to better care for themselves, be more involved in the community, and live as independently as possible.
